Field Note №003 — Tossa de Mar, Spain — 2026
A wrong turn, on purpose
A page from the Sketchbook · Gouache · 25.5 X 38 cm · 2026

I took a wrong turn looking for the sea and found a courtyard instead — wisteria spilling over a single blue lamp, the whole square holding its breath in the afternoon heat.
No companions this time, no card table — just me and the shade, waiting for the sun to clear the roofline. Some pages are like that. They don’t carry a story so much as an hour.
“Some afternoons don’t ask to be turned into anything. They just want to be sat through, all the way to the light.”
— tucked in for those who like to lean in. Skip it if you'd rather just look.
The shaded courtyard — viridian and burnt sienna bodied with a little white, kept deliberately heavy so the dark holds its weight.
The wisteria — mineral violet kept chalky and dragged over the dark; gouache lets it sit on top of the shade instead of sinking in.
The one blue lamp — cerulean almost straight from the pan; the single clean, cool note in the whole hot square. The rare spark.
The fall of light — Naples yellow laid opaque across the stones, where the afternoon finally arrived.

The Paintbox
Describe the scene in front of you — the tool plans how it sings warm against cool, picks tubes from your pans, and tells you the order to lay them. So you stop making mud.
