Happiness on a Cheese Farm

A Dog, a Stick, and an Unexpected Welcome
The moment we arrived at Combe Belle, joy trotted toward us on four legs. A fluffy farm dog greeted us like old friends, dropped a stick at our feet, and stared with the kind of hopeful intensity only dogs can master. One throw became five, then ten. The sun warmed the gravel path, and suddenly we weren’t just visitors — we felt like part of the farm’s routine.
Waiting That Didn’t Feel Like Waiting
The shop only allows one group at a time, so we wandered while another client finished inside. But waiting here didn’t feel like waiting. It felt like stepping into a slow, sunlit postcard. The air smelled fresh and crisp. The dog kept insisting on “just one more throw.”
A Chance Encounter With the Farmer’s Husband
While we were busy keeping the dog entertained, a man drove by in a small farm vehicle. a He laughed when he saw us still playing fetch.
“Ah, he has adopted you,” he said..
And just like that, we were chatting — about the farm, the goats, the land. This gentleman moved to France from Germany for love. He takes care of the goats and the farm while his wife runs the shop and makes cheese. It was one of those small, sincere encounters that only happen in rural France, where friendliness is part of the landscape.
Baby Goats: The Chaos of Cuteness
The client inside the shop waved us over to the barn. Inside, baby goats bounced around like popcorn. When they saw us approaching, all stood up and placed their tiny hooves on the top of the fence. Their curious noses nudged our hands. They were pure, chaotic joy — the kind that makes you forget everything else.
Meeting the Cheese Maker Herself
When it was finally our turn to enter the shop, the lady owner welcomed us with the same warmth her husband had. She explained each cheese with pride — le fromage frais, le demi-sec et le sec. I felt a quiet happiness welled up in my heart because I realised I was speaking with her in French.
The walls were lined with gold medal certificates, proof that her craft wasn’t just artisanal; it was exceptional.
An Invitation Into Their World
Before we left, she said:
“If you like, stick around. When the goats return from the hill around 5, you can visit the dairy room.”
It wasn’t just an invitation — it was trust, generosity, and a glimpse into the rhythm of their life.
Where Happiness Turned Into Creativity
As we walked away, still laughing about the dog’s insistence on one more throw, I realized something:
The couple’s friendliness, their joy in simple things, their love for their animals and their craft — all of it stayed with me.
It inspired me so much that I later created my video Hee Hee Cheese.
Combe Belle reminded me that happiness doesn’t need to be loud. It can be a dog, a stick, a smile, a piece of cheese made with care.
It can be found in the smallest corners of the South of France — if you let yourself wander.
